From withdrawal to hostless - the paralysed story of the group H of 2023 U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Image
On 26 August 2022, a few weeks before the start of the U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers for the tournament in Uzbekistan 2023, AFC received a blowing shock: Australia, one of Asia's major football powers, renounced the rights to compete and would not send team to play. Despite plead by the AFC, the Australians refused to follow, for the Australians to rather abandon the U-20 World Cup instead of travelling. The reason? Iraq was the host. At the time of Australia's withdrawal, the Aussies repeatedly stated about insecurity in Iraq, notably due to unrest and violent protests related to Iraq's political climate. The Iraqis have not had a representative government, and still not by now. Australian reason was not unfounded, but the AFC was slow to address. Subsequently, Australia withdrew, causing the qualification in the whole turmoil, for now Australia's group only had three teams to compete: Iraq, Kuwait and India. Just a week later, the group H could not begin as expected. Iraq...

A short preview on the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification third round in Asia – Matchday 9

Already we have seen how the situation played out, already two teams have booked places in Qatar, and there shall be a potential third, fourth and maybe a fifth to qualify. Group A Lebanon vs Syria Lebanon 's 1-1 draw to Iraq in Sidon had effectively crippled the Lebanese from dreaming further for the World Cup, as their distance with the UAE is now just a win. However, Lebanon can still think about it, in case the Lebanese can ever obtain wins in the next two games while the UAE fail against Iraq and South Korea. This is possible for the first task, as the upcoming opponent for Lebanon is Syria , a team that has been, alongside Iraq, winless after eight games. This is the chance for Lebanon to gain their first-ever home win, already been beaten painfully by Iran, South Korea, the UAE before only won a point after facing Iraq. While the H2H is not totally favourable, with just five wins out of 24 meetings, the Lebanese have been undefeated against Syria since 2013 (3W, 1D). With Vi...

One year after the failed Capitol riots, Vietnamese diaspora's right-wing sentiment has shown no sign of waning - it has grown only more with lesser democratic means

Image
On January 6th, 2021, a shocking unrest broke out near the Capitol Hill. Encouraged by then-upcoming ousted President Donald Trump, who kept repeating the false claim about stolen elections, the crowd invaded the Capitol Hill, killing at least five people (including one policeman) with hope to u-turn the election. The insurrection failed, but this was a turning point - for many American lawmakers, it was a clear assault on the country's democratic system and thus, various groups like Proud Boys, QAnon and Oath Keepers have been listed as "domestic terrorists" - a really scornful term to describe people trying to remove democracy in the States. The reactions was immediate - a complete shame for so many Vietnamese people abroad. A lot of Vietnamese scholars openly condemned the assault and accused the people of insulting Vietnamese freedom heritage flag and its culture. For some people, this assault was even more effective than any communist propaganda perpetuated - it rui...

A short preview on the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification third round in Asia – Matchday 8

The February stage of the qualification in Asia has already witnessed teams that qualified, and teams that won't. How would it play out, though, is still on the hand. Group A Iran vs United Arab Emirates The 1-0 win in Tehran over arch-rival Iraq means Iran has officially become the first team in Asia to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, a complete turn around from the earlier troubles of the second round. Such remarkable turn around ensures Iran as the most powerful national team in Asia and a signal for any opponent to not underestimate the Iranian resolute. This is best seen with Iran's ability to deliver goals in necessary moments, as well as having an extremely capable defence since the arrival of Croatian  Dragan Skočić, conceding just three goals in process. Although Iran's World Cup record is anything but rosy, having never progressed beyond the group stage, the Iranians would try to obliterate its opponents to celebrate the revival of its fortune. This makes the...

The trip to Australia - a land that is far from promising - and it can be an end to Vietnam's dream

Image
Australia. A European entity that is on the Asian football family. It sounds strange but it is. When joining the AFC in 2006, the country has just begun to learn to build a concrete football culture, something it lacked entirely. And now, when its football is just enjoying decent growth, it is facing an uphill task of winning all remaining four games, in order to survive. But while Australia's task is really difficult, Vietnam is even in a greater issue: to win at least the first points ever in the qualification. Being the least experienced in this round alone sucks, but, pointless after six games is hardly acceptable. Now, beating Australia is the only way to keep Vietnam on track, which, in reality, more like a fiction than reality. Even a crisis-hit Chinese side still obtained three points from Vietnam, then leave alone how could Vietnam ever win a game. It's so questionable. This dark reality is also intermingled with another issue related to the upcoming trip: a hostile di...

A short preview on the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification third round in Asia – Matchday 7

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FIFA had made a radical change, allowing nations to schedule games in January and February 2022, and this could be very necessary to speed up the upcoming World Cup qualification. Asia, in particular, has some benefits from such a schedule, but, how far will it go? Let's move by groups. Group A Iran vs Iraq Iran 's surprising resurgence in the third round, which Iran u-turned its second round misery, has really put the Group A into a closer conclusion that Iran will be able to achieve a place in Qatar. Although scepticism remains high throughout Iran's real quality when it comes to the World Cup, having never survived the group stage before, but right now, Iranians could focus to an early celebration. Contrast to Iran, its neighbouring rival Iraq has been unable to demonstrate the same form it used to be in the second round, being winless after six matches, including two heavy defeats to powerhouses Iran and South Korea earlier (both 0-3). To ...

Is it the time for the AFF to include Australia for future football competition?

Image
When Australia moved from the OFC to AFC in 2006, a number of question raised upon our head about Australia's football status. Well, it is a country mostly renowned in rugby and cricket rather than football - having just qualified for one World Cup in 1974; the 2006 marked Australia's second. However, Australia performed relatively well in that edition, only to fall to eventual champions Italy in the round of sixteen. But the AFC isn't uniform. It also includes sub-federations, which we have as of 2021, five sub-federation zones (West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia). Australia joined the Southeast Asian zone (AFF - ASEAN Football Federation) because of geographical proximity in 2013, but it has been the best-performed team from the region ever since, with five World Cups for now. Moreover, it carries the only honourable title for Southeast Asian football, the AFC Asian Cup, winning it in 2015. Australia is surely not at the best now - but by ou...

A short preview on the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification third round in Asia – Matchday 6

Image
Matchday 6 will mark the begin of the reserve fixtures, and there shall be no room for any mistakes. Several teams have begun to feel more and more wrath, while some are looking for a place in Qatar. Group A Lebanon vs United Arab Emirates A heart breaking late goal from Ahmad Nourollahi saw Lebanon fell from grace to a devastating home defeat, as Nourollahi was one of the two authors of Iran's injury time goals. Lebanon can still dream big though, as Lebanon has five points after five games, with a win and two draws as inspirations, something which is unthinkable given Lebanon's low status in Asian football stage. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates has left nothing but disappointments, with a loss to South Korea away extended its lacklustre in this stage with only three points from three draws. More worryingly, Bert van Marwijk's boys has failed to keep clean sheet in four consecutive games in this stage of the qualification. The UAE can still rally on the historical ...
