Like the majority of Turkish nationals, many are strong nationalists, he has rejected the genocide accusation. Yet in the past, only a minority of countries in the world would do this recognition, Uruguay and Cyprus spearheaded. Once the Cold War ended, however, the world shifted to a multipolar order, and the Armenian Genocide began to be remembered widespread. But the United States was, until 2019, not one of the countries that acknowledged the tragedy. With Erdogan's relationship with the West worsened, the United States had seized the opportunity.
